Back to Basics

After some time away chasing a few other pursuits I realized that in order to succeed you must learn to master yourself and your time, which brings me to my point of getting back to basics.  I have been having the best time of my life these last few years and its all because of Instagram.  I have met some incredible people who have such rich and diverse backgrounds and history, but we still share a common theme and that is “Style is Style” wherever you go.

With that in mind I have always been a fan of Black & White, these two colors cover the entire spectrum from formal to casual.  I know people who wear these colors everyday and it has become a standard if you will in their wardrobe.  I travel all the time for work and black and white fits the bill regardless of where you are from Times Square New York to Market Street San Francisco, you will see everyone and their rendition of Black & White.  For me I love custom clothes, labels are ok but there is nothing like the fit and even going through the process of being fitted.  One of the new trends right now is he long oversized look, which is great if yo have some pieces you can wear that bring the elongated look to your style.

For me that means I can wear my shirt untucked, now for most people that would be a problem but I have a trick I use when it comes to custom shirts and I always have them extend the cut of the shirt.  One thing that drives me crazy is when your shirts ride out of your pants because you move around.  If you get your shirts with a longer cut you will no longer have to worry about being able to move around without your shirt coming out.  I like the versatility of the look as I can throw on a Black Sweatshirt over this and change the shoes out to some Vans for a more casual look.  Either way you decide to rock that remember to find what works for you and build around those pieces and Black & White is a no brainer.

Monochromatic Moods

It’s that time of year when you can layer like a boss, so for me I like to pile on shades of colors with my looks.  When we are talking monochrome we’re not saying get all the exact same colors (unless it’s white), but how to make yourself look good in subtle shades of the same pallet.

Here I took this plum color suit from Calvin Klein, which is one of my go to suits in the fall and winter.  To jazz it up a bit I chose a patterned shirt to give it some pop but toned it back down by using a textured tie.  Noticed all of the colors have a slight difference but come together beautifully.

To complete the look I pulled out a pair of old Allen Edmonds shoes in this rich Ox Blood color.  I went simple on the details by leaving out the lapel pins or pocket square but I think the look is solid enough to carry me.  Whatever you do think your looks out, especially when it comes to wearing the same color and as always make sure you put your style to it.

Fall Forward

Finally a reason for more clothes has arrived, and it’s name is Fall.  For me it’s all about texture in the cooler months and how those fabrics work together.  Here I took a versatile Blue Blazer and paired it with matching blue khakis.  I’m not a fan of the same shade, I think the monotones should vary a bit when layering colors.

This fall with everything being texture the daddy of all things “Suede”, is making a big push.  Look for designers to have bomber jackets, pants and short jackets all made with suede.  One fabric that doesn’t get its merit is twill.  I actually like twill because it provides warmth in cold weather as cotton can get rigid.

I’m going all in with blue this season, I will be adding pops of color here and there but I’m hooked right now.  What ever you do please make sure you add your style to any look this season.

The Perfect Polo

So summers almost over and your wondering if you have any life in those shirts left.  Well I’m here to tell you get those polo’s back out.

Raf Simmons x Fred Perry $145

Here are some shirts that can go both ways and I mean office or casual.  I love this collaboration between Raf & Fred, the contrast is incredible enough to have a dramatic statement.

Moncler $188

“What would Don Drapper do?  Exactly what I am thinking when I see this Moncler polo.  There was another designer (David Hart) who did something similar with the GQ x GAP collection this year.  Still a lovely piece to have in rotation.

Orlebar Brown $185

With all of the patterned shirts sometimes we can get lost in the look.  When you need to keep it simple look for something that changes the game by offering a contrasting collar.  Blue is always a favorite.

Givenchy $535

When you want to go over the top, spare no expense.  Make it bright and light with this high end Givenchy polo shirt.

Be sure to get the most out of your polo by. Switching the look between office and casual when you can just by tossing one in the gym bag so after work you can look like a million bucks.

Seasons Change

Even though it’s still August I am already looking forward to this fall’s style, and right now Suede is on my mind.  So I was doing some cleaning at the house and decided to take some donations to the local charity when low and behold this suede weekend bag was being donated as well.  I told them don’t even put a tag on it just give it to me now.

I’m all about the rich feel and look of Suede and just to my luck I had bought some brown suede loafers from Aldo’s (50% off) and I know it was a match made in style heaven.

Be on the look out for suede from all the big names this year, I think I’m going to go the opposite way and go crazy with cords this year but who knows how I will feel in a few months.  For right now I’m stuck on this suede so the next conquest will be a jacket to back this weekend bag up in the rotation.

How to Know What Colors Look Best on You by GQ

I know what your thinking!  Out shopping and you see the shirt, not any shirt but the shirt for you.  The cut, feel & fabric is all there but it’s in a color you don’t think is good with your complexion.

No worries Mate.  GQ has you covered by providing a guide to know how to wear colors that compliment your skin tone.  The hard part is sticking to the script with most of us.  Here is a rule you need to live by, “learn to take advice”.  Ask someone you trust to give you their honest opinion of how certain colors look on you from an objective viewpoint.  Take the advice, tweek to your style and your good to go.

Last Days of Summer

Now that the summer is coming to an end its the perfect time to get those last few pieces out of the closet and I to rotation before it’s too late.  I’m a printed pants guy myself and anything cotton is great but in the winter months it’s a bit chillier so I go for wool or weighted pants.  Here I am wearing a pair of Urban Outfitters and I have to say I love these and how they fit.  Printed pants are always a conversation piece.

The second and most used item in my wardrobe is my Blue Blazer.  I can’t tell you how versatile and stylish this item has been for me.  I love it with a white or blue shirt and so,e khakis when it’s casual, or I dress it down and wear it with a tee and jeans, of course on special occasions out come the white slacks and I’m ready for whatever.  Fit is so important when buying a blazer so shop around.  This is one of my oldies but goodies by Tommy Hifiger.

Last but not least are those things that every woman looks at first before your smile, shoes.  Fall, winter I’m all about a more structured shoe but during the spring and summer I want comfort more than anything.  That makes these Donald J Pliners perfect from suits to jeans, you get the elegance of a loafer but designed in a sporty way.  Make sure to take care of your feet in this weather and keep cool this summer.

Bombers Away

If there is one thing I have learned is to fully embrace all aspects of your style.  I love nothing more than donning a nice blazer and some dapper accessories to match but sometimes you just have to switch it up.  With a bomber jacket your right on target!

Singly one of the new staples in American culture is the Bomber Jacket.  Fresh in a variety of colors and sizes, they are everywhere.  While not new, the bomber jacket started in the early war days when pilots didn’t have the comfort of technology so it was generally cold in the cockpits and the best way to stay warm was a huge piece of leather lined in wool.

Once the public got a glimpse of this incredible garment it has never been the same.  I am from the north where they were only reserved for the winter now everyone can wear them and in any climate.  Down south???  Grab a non lined bomber like this snazzy piece from in any color and watch your style stock rise.  Get cocky too and wear them with your favorite Timberland’s or Chelsea Boots.

Please don’t forget to mix it up or go straight chromo with it, either way you can’t loose.  When it comes to shoes Im a huge Chuck fan but you will see everyone with the Adidas All-Stars or Stan Smith’s.  Funny I never see anyone in Nike’s and a bomber, go figure.  As always make sure its a good fit and remember to make it Your Styled Look.
