“Happy Feet”

As men we often focus on the super exterior aspects of our style, in actuality all details are the same.  Lapel Pins, Tie Bars & Povket Squares but what about the hardest working part of our bodies?  Our feet need some attention too and nowadays there is a revolutionary new trend growing called Socks.

Socks used to be very utilitarian for men, a small faction of us really paid attention to incorporating them into a part of the outfit.  Now they have become a statement on their own with all new colors and patterns, they can now turn an ordinary look into a sophisticated fashion statement.  And now that more gents are listening to GQ or more importantly their tailor and using correct hem length and cuffs (That’s a topic for another day), socks are getting their respect as a major player in the fashion game.

With socks I say go all out but please be careful, there is a difference between complimentary and clash.  You know how I feel, I like a little spice with my outfit so the louder the better (conservatively speaking of course).  Either way do what you like and as always make it your styled look.

“The Essential Grey Suit”

There are a few huge moments in a gents life where you have to make some huge decisions and one of those is picking a grey suit.  With so many variations of the shade grey, it literally can be a task just choosing what shade of grey to wear with another shade of grey so you don’t look like your trying too hard.

The only 2 suits you really need to start off with are a spectacular navy suit and the accompanying grey suit.  I prefer the grey suits of London and how those blokes are all about tailoring.  Here I took it to the next level by wearing a spread collared shirt to get more of that proper look.  Next I thought of the color and patterns of the tie and shirt. Look closely and notice I took a micro gingham shirt with a striped tie.  All about how to carry these 2 different looks.

I kept this look traditional in the terms that there is no additional lapel pin or accessories on purpose.  I want guys to be able to say hey I can see myself in that at work and not feel like they are bringing too much attention to themselves.  Keep it simple by choosing a complimentary pocket square, it’s decorative and functional.

Secondly, when wearing a grey suit always think brown shoes first, black shoes are okay but just ok.  Think of it like this, if grey is a dull color to you the brown shoes bring it back to life so go wild.  One great thing about this suit is that I could throw on a white polo shirt and pair of Stan Smiths and I’m ready for anything.   So get a quality suit with a breathable fabric so you can get more wear during winter and summer, suits can be pricey even from department stores.  Depending on where you live, there are places now where you can get a custom suit for $350.   Always shop around and see who you like and how they cater to their clients, you want someone who can see what you describe to them and a healthy relationship with your tailor is like having a private doctor.

Make sure to think about getting the most out of that new grey suit so be sure to mix and match the blazer with a pair of jeans.   Functionality should be one of your strong points with your grey suit, so think outside the box.  As always show a little of your styled look.

“Tweed and a good Read”

Something I am embracing this year is more reading.  Don’t get me wrong I’m overwhelmed with the amount of information I find online, there is just something nostalgic about paper.  Mind you I don’t want to kill a tree, so recycled paper would be amazing.  Kinda like Vynal Records are making a comeback for a second life if you love old school.

I love that retro look or as the term applies “Geek Chic” is here, it gives me a chance to play with patterns and textures.  Here I have a few items I want to share.  First is how nice is this WD Black suit???  I got this baby online and less than $100, crazy lucky here.  Was just roaming the internet came across this store and Boom I have a blazing brown tweed suit.

More importantly let’s look at the details here.  I took a wool tie and paired it up with a tweed suit so you can see the textures working.  Secondly look at the different patterns from the watch to the buttons on the suit.  I took a military look to the band of my Timex (which I change out regularly) and the tones just fit together.  For the shoes I went Oxfords over Brogues. I love a smooth leather shoe that is very versatile in nature and these Aldo shoes are perfect with a suit or jeans.

Last but not least try to increase the amount of reading you do for the upcoming year.  I am a firm believer in setting achievable goals for yourself, and reading is something that benefits you be increasing your awareness and horizons.  Wether a book or daily reading of your favorite blog, increase your capacity to learn about new items.  In the mean time, keep it classy.

Mixed Feelings

I’m in love with the cold because it’s the perfect season to layer every piece of clothing you have.  One of my favorite articles of clothing is the 3 piece vest, it’s classic and versatile.
One trend I have noticed with the “Dapper Movement” is how more and more guys are switching their suits around to get a little more wear from traditional looks.  I’m all for it when wore correctly, but I do think this can get a little overboard, one trick is to think your look out.  Don’t try to do too much, it will be distracting to the eye and you want to create a very complimentary look.  Basic colors go a long way and throw in a pattern or two between the suit or tie, this can really accent your combo.

Don’t forget to add a little lift to your tie.  It’s that sweet spot between your tie bar and collar that gives your tie a stand out quality.  I love how when your standing to the side it gives a little “ummff” to the look.  Be bold with your tie, it’s one of the areas you can take a chance on with your suit.  Plus it’s one of the first things a woman will notice about you, and you know what they say.  Big tie, Big…….Style lol.

Vroooom for Printed Pants

This is the perfect season for printed pants, for that matter anytime is a good time for printed pants lol.  I want to talk about these Ralph Lauren’s I purchased on the sale rack at Marshall’s retail store.  The cost was so low at $20 but it took the extra step and went to my tailor and spent an additional $10 to have a cuff put in them, pants have so much more personality when cuffed.

The motorcycle’s on the pants really played well with this grey blazer from H&M for $59, the tie is a silk knot from H&M as well and was only $9.  I kept everything simple and just colored blocked, the only deviation to the outfit is a lavender pocket square from Nodstroms Rack for $8.

If your going to wear printed pants remember there are no rules, wear what you like.  I’m a bit more conservative because I work corporate America, but still like to add elements of myself instead of going with the crowd.  Either way do what you like and you can never go wrong.

Winter Wonderland at Six Flags

Holiday time is my favorite and nothing says holiday like spending it with family.  So I took the gang to six flags to enjoy some rides and all of the decorations.  Enjoy the light show 😊

Here I am in a few classic pieces I have stashed in my closet.  The leather is from GAP and is about 10 years old believe it or not, I take good care of it.  The boots are by Red Wing, love their shoes.  The jeans are by one of my favorite places to shop in NYC and that’s APC, last but definitely not least the cable knit is from Banana Republic.  None of these are new pieces, I just buy for longevity when I shop.  It’s one of the reasons I love Ralph Lauren because I think his style transcend time.

Out with the family and enjoying the scenes.

I remember being a child and I loved the snow, I guess genes run deep.

Happy Holiday’s Everyone.

Is High Fashion Dead?

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 9.11.08 PM

I have said it for a long time now, High Fashion is Dead.  Not that there are not some loyal die hards but the push to a more comfortable trend is emerging.

Recently, Amancio Ortega, founder of fast-fashion label Zara, briefly usurped Bill Gates as the richest man in the world, a shift that would seem to point to the fact that people are more interested in copping the latest runway trends on the low than ever before. However, according to Polyvore, a website that combines the social media aspects of Pinterest with online shopping (and searching for things to shop), says that users of its site, as well as parent company Yahoo, searched more for athletic labels like Nike and Adidas than any others this year. In fact, Zara was just the 10th most searched label, and the only fast-fashion label to crack the top ten.

Just last year, Topshop ranked #1, but this year, was just 35th. H&M, #2 in 2014, and fresh off a high-profile collab with Balmain, ranked 27th.

This info on it’s own hardly heralds the downfall of fast-fashion. If the videos from the Balmain x H&M release are any indication, people are straight-up going insane for some high-design at low prices. But, the results do point to the fact that as time goes on, sweatpants, hoodies, and a whole lot of spandex seems to be the aesthetic people are searching for—whether or not they’re actually wearing them to the gym. Nike stock is currently at an all-time high of $132 per share. Just today, reports came out that Adidas exceeded its online sales projections by $100 million. And even smaller brands like John Elliott, Stampd, and Yeezy are pushing guys towards wearing sweats over suits. After all, what’s a better investment? A simple tech-y sweatshirt you can wear to brunch, the gym, or brunch after the gym for years to come, or a printed polyester jacket you inherently know is only going to last you a season at best?

“A Little bit of a Bloke”

I’m a huge fan of GQ the magazine but my favorite is the British edition by far.  It’s not just the style but the cut of the clothes, how they value their look and more importantly the shoes.  Oh how I love their shoes.

Nothing has been more of a staple in British fashion than the Chelsea Boot, it has been on some of the greatest and most influential people of British culture.  The Beatles were amazing in their suits and boots, Harry Styles swears by them and for me I just can’t get enough of them.

They have finally arrived over in America and everyone and I mean everyone is in the game.  H&M has them, Aldo’s has them, you can’t walk to the corner without seeing them on at least 4 people.  I think that’s great and want to applaud Kanye West for bringing them to popular acceptance but they have been here for decades and I don’t see them leaving.

When this fad for America is gone I would have re-soled my shoes and keep them conditioned because a suit isn’t a suit without a good pair, and no way can you even think of being a rock star status without a pair and some ragged black jeans.

For right now I’m going to fall into the sea of followers, but once that sea is parted I will still be standing right there in the middle defiantly looking at those who were just temporary.  For me these shoes indicate a man set apart, how to stand out and make a statement all at once.  So just enjoy the ride and when it’s over put those boots back in the closet while I keep on rocking.

Game Time

It’s that time of year when everyone is going to a game, high school, pro or college.  When you go you should go ready to represent, and that’s what I’m doing here in this GAP varsity jacket and Ralph Lauren rep tie.

This is a classic prep look that goes a long way.  What I love about it is the plain look to the jacket, I have been thinking about upping the look by adding some great patches I found all over and incorporating them onto the jacket.  I went with some all American Dream jeans by A.P.C. Who make great selvage jeans.  I finished the look of with some loafers by Donald J. Pliner and it brought everything together nicely.

I thought about going with the all white converse and probably should have just to keep it all American.  It’s ok because as long as you wear it well it wears well on you.  Either way make sure you have a great fall line up in your closet and be sure to get some wear out of those jackets before it gets too cold.

Chi-Town, My Town

On the road this week and in addition to a few style pics wanted to share my adventures through the city, and since I’m staying downtown let’s start with the famous Chicago River Walk.

I love northern cities in the fall and Chicago has to one of my favorites (minus the weather).  I love the downtown area because there is so much to do from shopping to events or just taking a brisk walk through the town.   On this trip I am going all over the city this week, first stop will be the Chicago Art Museum where they have a special display of some of my favorite artist and the Impression era.

The other part of my week will be dedicated to some cool shopping on Michigan Ave, OMG I can’t wait to find some deals at the best retailers and up my wardrobe with some new pieces.  The second part of my week will be going to a Bulls game just to take a picture in front of Michael Jordan’s statue, from one great baller to another lol.

With so much to do it’s really not enough time to take everything in, so I will try to plan accordingly and see where the day takes me.   One things for sure, you have to get out and have fun and I plan on taking full advantage of my work week here.  So enjoy the pictures and I will keep you up to date on where I’m at.  By the way, stay stylish.
